On April 12th, 2016 a citizen of Ida Grove received a phone call from an individual stating they were with Mid-American Energy. The caller advised the citizen that there was an overdue balance on the account and that the power would be turned off unless the bill was paid in full. The caller would only accept payment in the form of a pre-paid credit card. The call back number used in the scam uses a pre-automated option menu very similar to Mid-American Energy’s automated menu, making the scam seem very authentic.
If you receive communications from a company, even one you do business with, always confirm the authenticity of communication you receive before you take action on it. If you are unsure, notify law enforcement immediately.
